Honolua Bay and Mala Ramp

I went up to Honolua Bay to dive today for the first time in well over a decade. Honolua Bay has been a marine preserve for as long as I have been on island (March 1995), so the fish populations and reef health were very good. The long jungle walk from the parking area wasn’t as bad as I remember. The path is actually graded now; It is still dirt, but much smoother than it was last time I dove there so my wagon had no problems navigating the path with my gear. πŸ™‚

The highlights of the dive for me were the little baby Spotted Eagle Ray and my first ever sighting of the Red-spotted Nudibranch. I’m starting to become a nudibranch/sea slug afficianado. πŸ™‚

As long as I was on the west side, I figured I should do my second dive in Lahaina, so I went to Mala Ramp. This was the first time diving it solo, no group, no buddy. That is the best way for me to learn and explore a site because I don’t have to worry whether my buddy is staying with me our whether I am staying with the group.

Saw all the usual suspects: Green Sea Turtles, Whitetip Reef Sharks, schools of Goatfish, yada yada. However, I did get my first photo of a Hawaiian Bigeye, both an adult and a juvenile, and managed to catch the skittish Indigo Dartfish too!
