Aloha Reef! (and Molokini)

Went out today with Island Style Diving and it was epic!

First stop, Molokini Reef’s End. All the usual suspects fish wise, but right when the group was turning… just beyond… was a school of baby Gray Reef Sharks. I wanted to swim out to them, but the divemaster was signaling me to return to the group as someone was running low on air. I did get a very short video of about 6 of them, but there were about a dozen.

Second stop was a new site, Aloha Reef! I have been wanting to dive this but was not sure exactly where it was. Now I know. A bit far to do from shore easily, but doable.

Aloha reef was “built” about 20 years ago by someone named Bill Monroe for his daughter Dana. It sits in about 90 feet of water and spells out “Aloha Dana” in coral, and has a few objects like a bell and a surfboard lying around it. What’s unusual here is a large expanse of plate coral, with large overhangs that are nice hangouts for sharks. It was a very beautiful reef overall with a nice population of fish.
